More teenage girls than ever are desperate to have breast enlargements it emerged today with a staggering 150% more now than this time last year.
It is believed that the increase in 18 and 19 year-olds wanting the surgery is mainly due to the fact that a high number of celebrities have gone under the knife in the last few months.
However psychology experts are warning that people opting for such drastic change at such a young age may face a life of surgery in an attempt to achieve the perfect body. Some parents have even started paying for their daughters operations as an eighteenth birthday present and one father told The Sun that he just wanted his daughter to look good on the beach during a family holiday.
The Transform chain of cosmetic surgeons has operated on 169 teenagers this year, compared to just 30 in 2006. Figures from the three largest cosmetic surgeons in the country estimate that about 600 youngsters have had the operation in the last year.
Spokesman for Transform said that ‘credit deals made the procedure that costs up to £5000, more attractive to teenagers.’ She feels that they are copying celebrities such as Jordan, who incidentally has just had her breasts reduced, and Chantelle Houghton the winner of Celebrity Big Brother 2006.
Out of the top ten most popular institutes in the country only one turns away 18 and 19 year-olds advising them to come back when they are 20 if they still desire the augmentation. Mark Berry Chief Executive of the company SurgiCare said ‘In some cases these young women have not finished developing.’
Breast enlargement is currently the most popular form of cosmetic surgery in the country followed by eyelid surgery, face lifts and liposuction. For men however operations to reduce the size of their ‘man boobs’ or ‘moobs’ is by far the most popular.
Psychology experts do fear however that with surgery being chosen increasingly more often by increasingly younger patients a life time of operations seems like an inevitable choice of these young women.
