Totton aim for cloud 9

AFC Totton could find themselves 9 points clear at the top of the Sydenhams Premier Leauge today with a win over local rivals Romsey Town.

The Testwood Park club play host to Romsey this afternoon and with a win will move a massive 9 points clear of second placed Wimborne Town who do not play until Wednesday.

Totton Assistant Manager Sean New is in a confident mood following a weekend of good results for the Hampshire Club. ‘The results went pretty well for us on Saturday and we could really put the pressure on our rivals with a win over Romsey.’

However even if the league leaders do claim the three points they will still only be nine points ahead with Wimborne Town holding three games in hand. The Magpies have a better goal difference than Totton and would move top if they win all their games for the remainder of the season.

Wimborne will not be too confident however having been held to a 1-1 draw against Brockenhurst on Saturday. Having taken the lead through master marksman Scott Joyce, who takes his goal tally to a staggering 35. Joyce headed in from a Steve Witcher cross. However the lead was not held for long as the Badgers equalised when a Danny Gibbon’s pass fed Danny Veal to slot neatly passed the advancing Alan Walker in goal. This was the second draw between the two sides this season and although a point away to Brockenhurst would normally be an acceptable result Wimborne boss Christer Warren was unhappy, ‘We are running out of games and Totton keep winning, so we can’t afford another slip up.’

Totton achieved a better result claiming an emphatic 3-1 victory at Bemberton HH. A stunning 30 yard screamer from captain Jamie Austen showed the league leaders intentions early in the first half. The lead was further extended when in the second half, Gareth Byres rounded his man to swing a low cross into the near post that was clipped in by the dynamic Floyd Hamodu. Although Bemberton pulled one back through a debatable penalty converted by Jack Slade the visitors hung on and the rout was completed by an unfortunate own goal from Harlequins’ defender Darren Harding.

All attention turns towards Testwood Park today as the battle for promotion continues and Totton look to improve their chances.
